The MG Car Club
Speed Championship enters its 22nd season in 2008 and we are again
particularly pleased to welcome Luffield Cars onboard as our
sponsor for their Eighth year. The Championship provides club
members with access to low cost motor sport in which their cars are
competitive. By providing classes for all models of MG (and AH Sprites)
with progressive modifications allowed, and with the emphasis on
friendly competition, we hope to encourage more club members into
affordable Motorsport;
one day this could be you!
Whether you are new to speed events or a seasoned
campaigner there will be something for you in the Championship. All
novices should start by reading the excellent
beginners guide but once bitten by the 'speed
bug' you'll want to emulate Chris Cooper and his 'bit
of a brute'.
You can choose to
compete for trophies in either the Northern Series or the Southern
Series Championship. Events take place mostly north or south of
Longbridge respectively but with some common venues eg Silverstone,
where drivers score points for their chosen series only.
All drivers also compete for
the top award, the National Championship, for
which points gained at any venue irrespective of its geographical
location count. All awards are presented at the North West and South
West Centres' Dinners:-
Our
calendar also carries links to event regs;
news and views are shared on our own
bulletin board. |

Luffield MG
ZR In Action
Despite the varying weather conditions at the MG Car Clubs 57th
International Meeting at the Silverstone Motor Circuit in June 2007, the
Luffield MG ZR Race Team proved a hard act to beat with Luffield Cars
Managing Director, David Wood and Caterham Champion and long time MG
racer Mark Humphrey, collecting Wins in both the 30 Minutes and 45
Minutes Enduro 2-Driver races at the 57th MG Car Clubs Annual Race
Meeting at the venue of the British Grand Prix. The week-end proved to
be very successful for the MG Club with over 550 race entries and
regular grids of up to 40 cars. Mixed conditions in
Qualifying enabled the duo to claim a 4th place with a 1:39.916 in the
first Qualifying on Saturday then 2nd place on Sunday in the second
session just loosing out to pole position by 0.012 secs to the MG ZR of
Ben Jacques.
Heavy rain only 20 mins
before both of the races caused much deliberation regarding the choice
of tyres, but the difficult choice of selecting “Slicks” on a wet track
was not the obvious one, but Mark started the race that way and was able
to lead into the first lap. With a strong field consisting of MG ZT 520
of Paul Luti and several MG ZR’s, MGB V8’s and a Morgan V8, Mark was
able to take the lead at the half way stage, when a car went off at the
Becketts complex which seemed to indicate a possible “Safety Car”
period. Mark was able to pre-determine this and whilst in the lead on
Lap 18 he immediately headed for the Pits to make the regulation Driver
Change. This proved to be his second great decision of the race and
David was able to get back onto the circuit before the Safety Car Train
passed the Pit lane entrance. All that he needed to do was retain this
position and ensure that the speeding ZR of Malcolm Gammons was firmly
in the mirrors for the remainder of the Race.
Ultimately the chequered
flag dropped at the 45 minute mark with Wood firmly in the lead, winning
Race 2 of the week-end by 9.7 secs. |

Yes, Luffield MG
support David Coulthard! However, if you're expecting the square
jawed Scot of Formula 1 fame you'll be disappointed. Our David
Coulthard can claim to be the original, as the Luffield MG driver is
a couple of years older than his more illustrious namesake. Based in
West Yorkshire, DC started competing in the Luffield Cars/MG Car
Club's Speed Championship in an MG
Midget, before progressing to the MG Trophy (
www.mgtrophy.co.uk ) race Championship in
2003. DC now drives a Luffield-backed MG ZR 190 and is a regular top
ten finisher.
The MG Trophy pitches
the ZR saloon against the TF sportscar, with classes for both full
race and road going cars. The full race ZR and TF cars have stripped
interiors, 190BHP engines and running on slick racing tyres. The
road going cars retain road trim, have less modified engines and run
on road legal tyres. The Championship is renowned for the closeness
of its racing, and has rounds across the UK, including Oulton Park,
Castle Combe and Silverstone.

Also
at the MG Car Clubs 57th International Meeting at Silverstone in June
2007, local driver, Suzanne Dignan from Barrow upon Soar had an
excellent weekend driving in her first race meeting since winning the
2006 Formula Woman Team Award. A change from the rear wheel drive
Caterham Roadsport car to a front wheel drive Luffield MGZR proved quite
a challenge, made even more demanding in the alternating wet and damp
condition that prevailed throughout the weekend. In the first race on
Saturday, she made good progress whilst learning the new skills and
techniques. On the Sunday, in a totally wet race, her patience and
previous experience paid off, and she secured the fastest lap of the
race for her class, beating the other 6 male competitors.
Suzannes second race of
the week was a 30 minute, 2-driver, pit-stop race where Suzanne shared
the Luffield MG ZR with her brother Peter. From a field of 44 cars they
started 18th on the grid and in conditions of heavy rain, moved steadily
up the field to take over the 4th overall at two thirds distance. A
spin and recovery just before the end saw a drop to 10th overall and a
third in class award, but they were both more than pleased with the
result in what was a dramatic and exiting race. Their next two events
are at Cadwell Park and at Snetterton, where they plan to build on their
success at Silverstone.
